Does a values-driven business drive business?
The further I get into working for myself, the more I realize how important it is to have a values-driven business. While almost all companies have stated values alongside their mission statements, I’m not sure how many actually operate with these values in mind.
Companies and brands often tout how they are “value-driven businesses,” yet customers, employees, and vendors don’t always receive treatment that aligns with those stated values. Are company values all talk and no action? Do they even matter?
I think they do. I took a great deal of time to choose my company’s values — ones that matter to me as a small business owner, marketing professional and person:
Accountability
Loyalty
Kindness
Inclusivity
Integrity
Passion
Do I live out these values every second of every day? No. Do I try my absolute best to infuse them into my work, relationships and daily life? Yes. I believe that you attract the type of energy you put out into the universe. Therefore, I would like to think that by attempting to live out my values each day, I will attract the type of clients, vendors and industry colleagues who align with them.
Does this drive revenue? I think so. By attracting people who share my values, I’m able to work more efficiency, peace and clarity. I don’t have to spend extra time and energy second-guessing myself or others and can focus on doing high-quality, creative work and living my life. This mindset remains paramount as I look for vendors to partner with, businesses to support and brands to purchase from.
I recently faced a very stressful situation in my personal life that required an enormous amount of time, energy and research. After spending hours vetting countless vendors, I ended up selecting a company I used two years ago. I had an awesome experience then and am having an equally stellar one now. The owner is a solid guy who values relationships, loyalty and doing the right thing. He and his team do outstanding work and are a pleasure to work with—he has a customer for life in me. At the end of the day, our work, brand and who we are as business professionals and humans are only as good as how we live out our values each day. I’d like to think we can make the world a better place by putting our money, time and energy where our mouth is. We all deserve that.
